Yesterday I traveled to the city, and along the way, I saw a road sign that read Attenuator Damage Ahead. ATTENUATOR?!? Just trying to read the word could cause quite a distraction. And then figure out the meaning!
So when I got home, I went to Google. There I found out that the definition was “an electrical device for reducing the strength of an electrical signal.” Well, that definition certainly didn’t make sense in my situation. So, I did a general search, and that’s where I found out what it means on a highway sign.
It means that some part of the guardrail is damaged! The attenuator is that part of the guardrail system that has crash cushioning.
Now, why didn’t the sign simply say Guardrail Damage Ahead?!?

P.S. I also learned from Google that attenuator in Pig Latin is attenuatoray.

But I also think Pig Latin in this case won't be necessary, since I usually use that to keep little ones from understanding. I think the word in plain English is "code" enough! :-)
But would I have even remembered the word well enough to check the dictionary later?

Wesley & I just moved up to a used class A diesel motor home - 40ft! I haven't driven it yet. Don't know when I will! Now I can quilt while we drive down the road! We'll be heading to Silsbee, TX, next Friday morning. I haven't checked our route yet, but we may be in your neck of the woods.
